Field Campaign MILAGRO

HSRL participated in the MILAGRO (Megacity Initiative: Local and Global Research Observations) campaign in spring 2006. One of the most complex field campaigns ever undertaken in atmospheric chemistry, MILAGRO is an international effort to observe and quantify air pollution emitted by Mexico City from multiple perspectives. The results from MILAGRO are expected to be applicable to the world’s megacities, those with 10 million or more inhabitants. In addition to NASA researchers, other field participants include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), several U.S. universities, and more than a dozen Mexican partners.

During the campaign, researchers used data from research satellites, aircraft and ground-based instruments to investigate the transformation of air pollution as it flows downwind from Mexico City and learn more about impacts of air pollution on human health and climate.

HSRL flew on the NASA Langley King Air B200 during MILAGRO -- from March 2006 to June. Click on a date below to view HSRL data from that day of the mission.
