Even with one technology already in the pipeline to potentially change the way scientists measure Earth’s energy budget from space, the transformative minds at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia are still thinking ahead. DEMonstrating the Emerging Technology for Measuring the Earth’s Radiation (DEMETER) offers an advanced approach to measure Earth’s energy budget with increased data quality while reducing cost, size, mass and risks from current measurement techniques. The energy budget — or radiation budget — is the balance between the radiant energy that reaches Earth from the Sun and the energy that flows from Earth back out to space. When the balance tips toward more energy coming in than flowing out, warming occurs.
