About:
Gary Fleming began working at NASA Langley Research Center in 1993 and joined the civil service in 1997. Gary currently serves as the Project Manager for NASA’s Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity Observatory (CLARREO) Pathfinder (CPF) mission. As the Project Manager, Gary leads a multi-organizational team comprised of NASA Centers and contractors and has responsibility for all aspects of CPF project execution. CPF will launch a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer to the International Space Station in the 2023 timeframe to demonstrate technologies and techniques that will significantly advance our ability to detect and predict climate change and its associated effects. Gary was previously the Langley Senior Technologist for Measurement Systems, serving as the point of contact for the NASA Langley Measurement Systems product line from concept-to-flight. In this capacity Gary advised Center Leadership on technology trends, opportunities, solutions, challenges, and collaborations to advance the Center strategy. Gary served on the Langley Technology Council, contributed to development of the Langley Strategic Technology Investment Plan, and guided Center technology investments. Gary served as review panel member / review chair on several NASA Langley space flight projects such as SAGE-III and the Radiation Budget Instrument. Gary previously served as the project Chief Engineer for NASA’s Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) Flight Model #5 (launched on Suomi NPP) and Flight Model #6 (launched on JPSS-1/NOAA-20) space flight projects. In this role Gary led teams of technical discipline engineers in contract insight/oversight activities and in preparation for spacecraft-level integration and test. Earlier in his career, Gary developed and deployed innovative optical instrumentation systems for use within Langley wind tunnel facilities. During this time period Gary gained experience in lasers, optics, optoelectronics, image processing, and aero/structural dynamics.
