Mr. Joseph Gasbarre has over 20 years of project and leadership experience specializing in flight and concept systems development for space-based missions and atmospheric flight vehicles. He currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Science Directorate. Previously, Joseph was serving as Branch Head of the Structural and Thermal Systems Branch within the Engineering Directorate at NASA Langley Research Center and prior to October 2022 was the Mars Sample Return Deputy Program Director – Technical with NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD) at NASA Headquarters. Prior to starting that assignment in October 2020, Mr. Gasbarre was the Science Directorate Deputy Director for Flight Programs at NASA LaRC with responsibility for project execution and development of NASA LaRC’s flight projects funded by SMD. From October 2017 to March 2019, Mr. Gasbarre was detailed to NASA’s Office of Chief Engineer where he was the Acting SMD Chief Engineer, the embedded engineering technical authority for the Agency responsible for all SMD missions.
Before his detail to NASA Headquarters, Mr. Gasbarre was the SAGE III/ISS Project Manager during the project’s launch and commissioning phase after having been the project’s Chief Engineer since its inception in 2010. He also simultaneously had served as the Assistant Branch Head for the LaRC Engineering Directorate’s Atmospheric Flight and Entry Systems Branch since 2015. This work followed a decade of experience as a thermal engineer on various projects including the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) mission, the Orion Launch Abort System (LAS), and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) Aerobraking team.
Mr. Gasbarre has authored or co-authored over 25 technical publications. He received his BS degree in Aerospace Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and his MS degree in Aerospace Systems from the University of Maryland. He lives in Williamsburg with his wife, Shannon, and three children who together enjoy spending time hiking, camping, and skiing.
