About:
Alex grew up in southern Maryland and earned his BA in Chemistry from Hood College in Frederick, MD. While an undergraduate in 2016, he participated as an intern in the NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP). There he worked under Dr. Don Blake, which led him to join Dr. Blake’s lab for graduate school at UC Irvine, where he earned his PhD in Analytical Chemistry in 2021. While at UCI he deployed on the WE-CAN (2018) and FIREX-AQ (2019) field campaigns, and was a SARP mentor for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. His dissertation focused on the effects of biomass burning emissions on urban air quality. Alex then got a position as a postdoctoral researcher at Kennedy Space Center, where he joined the science team for the Mass Spectrometer observing lunar operations (MSolo) instrument. MSolo is a commercial-off-the-shelf quadrupole mass spectrometer that has been ruggedized for spaceflight, and is manifested on two CLPS missions to the lunar South Pole, which are scheduled to fly later this year. His work with MSolo involved the full spacecraft design, characterization and testing phases. He joined the CERES Instrument Working Group in December 2023.
